Numerology is considered one of many traditional systems used to 'divine' or analyze
relationships between numbers and physical objects, living things, words and their
their 'hidden' meanings.
Numerology is not considered part of mathematics today, but was popular among early
mathematicians, such as Pythagoras. Today, numerology is often associated with the occult but back in the day of Pythagoras and his fellow Greek philosophers, they believed that because mathematical concepts were more practical and easier to classify then physical ones, they had then, greater actuality.
Numerology is one of the easiest of the occult arts to use and understand. The
Mayan also, although one can't say they used 'numerology', considered number a very
important if not all important, component to life. They were famous for the study of
astrology and are known for the accuracy of their calendars. Many ancient civilizations used number as a guiding principle in relation to the stars.
To understand numerology and how to use it, is a simple task. There are eleven numbers that are used when constructing numerology charts. They are the numbers 1 through 9 and 11 and 22. Eleven and twenty two are normally referred to as 'master numbers' and suggest a potential for a higher degree of learning and or achievement.
While there are 'standards' to this art, most practiced numerologists develop
their 'own style' when it comes to 'reading' from the numbers or developing 'ways' to read from them. I guess it can be said that most who practice this art, eventually develop their own 'system' within this system.
In the most commonly used practice of Numerology, it is customary to take the birth date, the given name and the name that the individual most 'identifies' with, for purposes of 'divination'.
Numerologists use what is called digit summing to arrive at the final value of a date or of some one's name. Digit summing is the practice of 'adding' all numbers, single digit at a time, until a final single digit is calculated, which then can be said to represent that whole 'entity' or their relationship to life.
The birth date numbers are often called the 'life path' number. The number taken from your name is often called the 'Destiny' or 'Fate' number. Some numerologists go further and analyze the values within patterns such as the vowels within your name and refer to this number as the 'Soul' number.
An example of how I would arrive at a'Life Path' number, using the birthday is this:
August 13, 1968
8.13.1968
8+1+3+1+9+6+8 = 36 (1 + 3) =
9And so if this were a real birthday, then the 'Life Path' number would be nine. This number has meaning, characteristics, guiding principles and in my opinion a 'personality' associated with it. These then can be used to help the individual make personal relations to their life, day, year, etc...
To get the number value of a letter, Numerologists can use the English alphabet and the position of each letter. For instance, A is letter #1, B is letter #2, C is #3 and so on to Z is letter #26.
In this example, I will use the name JANE DOE
J.A.N.E
10.1.14.5
D.O.E
4.15.5
Once the letters are numbered, then digit summing is applied to 'reduce' the letter's number to a single digit.
J.A.N.E.D.O.E
1.1.5.5.4.6.5 = 27 and 2+7 = 9
In this case, JANE DOE's 'Destiny' number is 9 and if her birth date is the example above, then Jane's Life Path number would also be a 9. In this case, these two numbers are the same but in many cases, they will not be. Again, it also depends on which Numerologist or system, you decide to apply.
People seek out and use Numerology 'readings' the same way they might astrology readings, tarot readings or the way some use the Mayan sacred calendar day energies... as guides and Oracles to their lives and the life they are in. Staying within the 'natural' flow of life energies, some believe, is a way to anticipate what and how your day might be affected. Energy flows in a cycle and so many who practice the occult arts believe that recognizing, utilizing and making decisions appropriate to these cycles, keeps us more in tune and in rhythm to the Greater forces of Universe. I use the word 'Universe' to cover many other words used for Source. "Go with the flow" as they say...
It's in our nature to want to know 'the future' or get a glimpse of it. The unknown, mysterious, unseen, hidden thing called 'tomorrow' has always been a driving factor when it comes to the art of divination.
I use my own method of numerology, following the basic examples given above. I apply this knowledge, however, to phrases within our language that are used through out time or ‘sayings’ that are common among most people. I combine this with other number systems such as the Mayan number systems and the IChing to take my own glimpse of past, present and in some cases and in my own opinion, my future.
To become familiar with number is important and to know their characteristics, their personalities, which can also be called their ‘energies’, is fundamental to our lives. At the core of our being, we are all vibrating energy. This has been so for all of time and through all of time, this will be so. Number is a universal language as some of the ancient philosophers, sages and wise people knew.
As they say… a picture can speak a 1000 words. And as I believe… nine numbers can tell us most of the rest of what we CAN’T see. The other three pair of master numbers are simply magic.
11 22 33 ... and the 13th is what makes it all fun...

There are 3 double-digit numbers that, while they are rooted in the single-digit numbers, require special emphasis and attention. These are 11, 22, and 33.They are called Master numbers because they possess more potential than other numbers. They are highly charged, difficult to handle, and require time, maturity, and great effort to integrate into one's personality.http://www.decoz.com/Masternumbers.htm
